Pathway and Coursework
We encourage all JMHP students to become global citizens and to pursue global engagement by coursework that counts toward the 15-credit JMHP curricular requirement and the 6-credit JMHP Pathway in Global Engagement. The JMHP will continue to offer a number of JMHP Classes with a focus on global engagement and will also authorize certain non-JMHP study abroad courses (up to three credits) to count toward both.
JMHP STUDY ABROAD CLASSES
The John H. Martinson Honors Program offers study abroad classes as part of the Oxford Summer Study Abroad Program. There are typically 3 - 4 classes offered each summer and JMHP students are eligible to earn up to six credit hours in this study abroad experience. These credit hours may be applied to the Global Engagement Pathway.
JMHP students who attend the Oxford Study Abroad Program may count either MUSI 3621 or ID 2242 and their selected JMHP class toward the JMHP curricular requirement and toward the JMHP Pathway in Global Engagement if they participate in the required supplemental activities (typically a guided tour of Oxford and a blog post).
The application for the Oxford Program usually opens in late August and closes in February.
AUTHORIZATION OF NON-JMHP STUDY ABROAD CLASSES
To expand the JMHP’s capacity to encourage and recognize JMHP students’ global engagement coursework, students are eligible to apply to have up to three credit hours of non-JMHP study abroad coursework applied to the 15-credit curriculum requirement. These courses are offered by partner Georgia Tech study abroad programs and professors and deliver small, active-learning, “JMHP-style” learning experiences that include significant globally engaged course content.
JMHP students may request review and HP authorization of study abroad courses that they have already completed or that they are considering taking in an upcoming semester. To do so, please email the JMHP with evidence that your study abroad course satisfies these criteria for JMHP authorization:
- Small
- Active-learning
- Globally Engaged
YOUR EVIDENCE WILL TYPICALLY CONSIST OF:
- A screen shot from the OSCAR listing for the course, showing the number of students enrolled or showing the class cap for a future course offering (for evidence that the course was/will be small); and
- The course syllabus (for evidence of significant active-learning elements, such as projects, field trips, presentations, or discussion, and of globally engaged course content, including significant learning about non-U.S. subject matter).
